China
Adoption Program
| Children
available: The health of the children has generally
been excellent, however, families should expect
minor physical, emotional or developmental delays
often associated with institutional care. More and
more orphanage are utilizing foster care programs,
eliminating many of these issues. Older children and
those with special needs are also waiting for
families. Infants typically range from 8 to 14
months at time of referral.
Eligible applicants:
Married couples 30-45 years may adopt infants 12
months and younger. Couples between 50–55 years
must be open to a child older than 3 years. Families
with no more than four children are accepted.
Because China has a strict limit on the number of
single parents who can adopt, please check with the
agency on the status of the waiting list. Applicants
must provide evidence of adequate educational
preparation, finances, family support and good
health for a Chinese adoption to be approved. |

Process: ABC
Adoption Services offers a personal and predictable adoption
process. Our China program staff will assist you with every
step of your adoption. Our highly experienced facilitator
has experienced staff in China who will escort you
throughout the adoption process. Required documents are
submitted to the Chinese government for approval. The time
frame from submission of documents until referral currently
averages approximately fifteen to seventeen months from
dossier submission to referral. Referrals for
the requests of older or special needs children may take
less time. A child referral consists of name, photograph and
medical report, including Hepatitis B test results.
China typically does not test for HIV. You will be asked to
provide referral acceptance within one week unless there are
specific medical issues that need to be addressed with a
physician.
Travel is
approximately 8 - 10 weeks after referral. Small groups of
families travel together to China for a 14-day trip and are
met and escorted throughout their stay. There is an
opportunity to tour in the Beijing area for two days, prior
to receiving your child. This is optional. All travel and
accommodation arrangements are made in advance by the
facilitator.
The children
available from China are mostly (95%) girls. This is a
result of China’s effort to control population by imposing
a one-child policy that penalizes families for producing
more than one child. Because of a strong preference for
boys, in many cases a baby girl will be abandoned to clear
the path for the arrival of a son. Keeping with Chinese
heritage, the son, when grown, would care for his parents in
their elder years. All children in China who are available
for adoption reside in welfare homes or orphanages.
